At Normandale Center for Healing & Wholeness, our staff are trained as caregiver consultants to provide care consultation services to clients. A care consultation involves a one-on-one meeting to learn more about the individual's caregiving journey and offer an opportunity to develop an ongoing relationship where we work together to develop a collective action plan that serves the families specific needs.
The Minnesota Board on Aging (MBA) has standards required for professionals to be competent in providing this service. A Caregiver Consultant is required to complete basic training and continuing education that is offered by the Minnesota Board on Aging (MBA) and Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). In addition to the required training, professional qualifications including appropriate degree, ethics and professional values, and cultural awareness/responsiveness are required to become a Caregiver Consultant.
Our staff are trained beyond these standards, all have graduate degrees in social work or public health, and continuously engaging in additional professional learnings to increase their competencies and understandings of how to support caregivers and their care partners. For example, our care consultation staff recently completed more specific training for people living with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The ALS caregiver education course included gaining a better understanding of the physical and emotional impacts of ALS and strategies for care and resources to guide care decisions.
